Yew, Tiama, Laurel Burl, Tineo, and Satinwood Veneer: Woods With Flair by Peter Rodgers
Here are five very interesting species to think about the next time you need some flair in your wood veneer projects.
Yew Veneer – This is a red or orange-brown species that has a straight grain for the most part with a little bit of irregularities and curving. It has various unusual streaks including mauve, purple, and brown clusters and patches, which enhance the attractive appearance. This species was one of the most widely used for bow staves in the United Kingdom, and as a veneer, it is used in marquetry, paneling, cabinetry, and many other applications.
Tiama Veneer – This is a red-brown species with a straight but interlocking grain and uniquely patterned darker streaks. It is a mid-weight wood one can easily work with using hand or power tools. It is part of the Mahogany wood family but is also related to Sapele wood veneer. It is an excellent choice for furniture and panels. As a solid wood, it is used for boat cabins, rail car carriages, and planking.
Laurel Burl Veneer – This is a blond or yellow wood with a great pattern and tight clusters. It appears very upscale and dignified, and can be applied in various high-end applications. It is close in appearance to Myrtle Burl, and in certain cases can be an alternate wood for it. Just like Myrtle, it has a two-tone light and dark character. Laurel Burl can be used for inlays, displays, and paneling.
Tineo Veneer – This is a very rare and exotic looking species from Chile that is also sometimes called Indian Apple Wood. It’s an excellent choice for pedestals, panels, high-end small displays, speaker enclosures and all areas of high visibility. It has an extraordinarily unique design with a pink tone overlaid with black streaks that look like flames. Tineo is difficult to match one sheet to another so it is a good idea to use it for small jobs.
Satinwood Veneer – This wood has an appearance so close to Figured Movingui (also known as Nigerian Satinwood) that they are basically interchangeable. It has a pale yellow tone and a beautiful block mottle or fiddleback figure. Satinwood is typically dense and heavy. It is largely used as a decorative veneer for lines, inlay work, displays, bands, and more.
