whats the difference between a normal motor and a servo motor?
Servo motors used to “output” positional information, such as the valve positions in chemical plant, and very large servo motors, were once used to control the position/elevation of turrets on battleships. Servo motors are able to hold the shaft at a fixed rotation against a load, without burning out. Most other motors would overhead and burn out if that was attempted for more than a few seconds.
For fast response times torque tends to be high, and inertia minimised.
Lower power servos, sometimes utilise stepper motors. Like other servo motors these can hold the output shaft in position, but unlike other servo motors, the output position isn’t continuously variable, instead being limited to say 90 degree angles. The output position of the shaft is measured, and compared to that desired, if it’s off then the motor is send an electrical signal to turn it in the right direction.
In light duty applications a normal motor could be connected up in a similar way to a RC servo motor. however it’s quite likely that the motor will burn out quite fast, as they aren’t really up to the task of holding a shaft in a fixed position when they have “stalled”
